A garage door repair opener can make a difference in energy savings on a solar home, preliminary test findings from a case in Utah show. Those findings come in relation to a garage door Martin Door Manufacturing contributed to a solar home project in Holladay, Utah in March. Ned Hart, marketing director for TerraSun Energy, provided initial test data on the home conversion and said the data shows the new door is making a difference. The findings include the following details and data: - The new opener cut down significantly on power usage. The homeowner found the old garage door opener was heavy on energy usage in comparison to the new opener. It takes approximately 40 watts of power to operate the opener, according to Hart. He said the old opener used about 440 watts to open or close the door The family cycles the garage door about 600 times a month, so Hart estimated a substantial savings in energy, with the new opener. "This is a dramatic energy savings over the course of each month, reducing energy consumption from 4500 watts to 435 watts each month, or 48,000 watts annually. For a solar home, this is a REALLY big deal," Hart said. - The new opener also facilitated use of CFL or LED bulbs, while the old opener did not. That cut energy usage from 120 watts to three, according to the energy official. - The double pane windows used in the insulation make a big difference in energy savings in the garage. Hart said the added insulation factor from the door has made a noticeable difference in the temperature of the garage, and thus has impacted the temperature of the home itself. As part of the solar conversion, workers applied a coat of Temp-Coat, an insulating paint, to the walls of the garage adjacent to the home. Test data and measurements are constantly being taken. Hart was eager to note that the thermal images of the home showed the concrete was radiating more heat than the garage door. Before the project began, the home's gas and electric bills for January 2009 alone totaled $460. The goal for the home is "0" monthly gas and electric utility bills. Various measures are being taken to accomplish this. For example, during the day the surplus electricity generated by the solar panels actually backs up the meter. At night, the meter moves forward as electricity is consumed from the landline. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/2179217

Garage door repair services is something all homeowners have to deal with at some point in time. Understanding the common problems you may face can make it easier to explain the issue to the technician when he or she arrives. It can also help you understand what the service technician is doing to fix the problem. 1. You Push the Button, but It Does not Close Modern garage door openers have built-in sensors that feel the resistance on the hatch. If there is a broken spring or hinge, then mechanics will not try to pull the chain. In some instances, the opener is the problem. Only a qualified technician can diagnose the issue. 2. You Can Hear the Opener Running, but Nothing Happens Openers wear out over time, and the gears are usually the first thing to go. If these gears are stripped, they cannot move the chain, which raises and lowers the hatch. In some cases, you can replace the gears. In others, you have no choice but to replace the entire system. 3. You Have a Kick Out Door and Want It Repaired You may find some technicians who are willing to fix your one-piece door, better known as a kick out. However, as these are outdated systems, they are unsafe. While yours may seem to be in decent working condition, you should have it replaced with a newer, safer model. 4. The Hatch Opens Stiffly and Makes Noise Noisy garage doors are a common problem. Your garage door repair technician will first replace the rollers in order to solve the problem. Most companies use plastic rollers that wear out. When having them replaced, you should ask for low-resistance rollers. This model works smoother and is lower maintenance than traditional options. They are worth the additional cost. 5. You Have an Old Opener and Want It Replaced If your opener is not working properly, you may wonder if it has to be replaced. Your garage door repair technician will be able to look at your equipment and make a determination about whether they have the parts needed to fix the problem without replacing the entire unit. However, in the interest of safety, if your old system does not have a safety beam, you need to exchange it for a newer system. 6. The Rollers Are Out of the Track and It's Pulling the Door This is actually a very common garage door repair issue. There are several different reasons why this could happen. Your rollers could be so worn out that they work their way out of the track. Sometimes the track itself has been bent or is obstructed by something within the room. Other times, the large springs at the top are broken and cause the panels to pull off track. One of the most overlooked causes is when you've accidentally hit a panel with your vehicle. The damage may look insignificant. However, if left unrepaired, over time it will pull the panel off track. Thankfully, the solution is relatively easy to fix, and it can be repaired. Repairing garage door is not that complicated. Here are some tips you need to be aware of. It is very important to be always aware if the door is faulty or not. By being aware of minor problems and having it fix as soon as possible, it can eliminate the possibility that the problem can worsen anytime. Once the problem becomes big, expect to be paying more just to have it fixed. Most likely, damage in the garage door can happen either in the door opener or the door itself. Although it is more often that the problems happen in the door because of constant movement. One common problem would be the loosening of the bracket that will also cause the metallic tracks to loosen up. You can fix this by tightening the screws and bolts from the inside of the garage door. The tracks of the door can also get damaged. If you think it is beyond repair, then the best solution is to buy a replacement. However, if the damage is not intensive, you can always get a hammer to pound it back to its right place. Just be sure that the tracks are aligned to each other. Sometimes it also happens that the garage door cannot move well because of the dirt accumulated in between the tracks. All you need to do is scrape off the dirt to clear the passage way. It is also important to check on the garage door springs once in awhile to readjust it. If you think you cannot handle the maintenance of your garage door, do not hesitate to call someone who knows that will do it for you. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/5810745 When it comes to modern conveniences, garage doors rank high up there in the list of home gadgets that we cannot do without. This preference may be traced back to the fact that, throughout the UK, people have shown an increased preference for driving their own cars rather than commuting to and from work. In fact, in Great Britain alone, the proportion of households with access to a car increased from 52 to 75% during an almost 40-year period (1971-2007). Thus, with many household now purchasing vehicles at a rapid rate, the need to protect such investments at home have also become of high concern. This is where garage doors come in. These come in various materials and basic operating mechanisms. This article introduces one of the most popular types in the UK- roller garage doors. What is a roller garage door? Garage doors differ in many aspects; primarily, they differ in terms of the operating mechanism used to open and close the door. A roller door gets in name from the way a curtain of galvanised, lightweight material rolls up or down a tube that is placed on top of the garage entrance. Roller garage doors are different from other mechanism in that they are lightweight, easy to maintain, and easy to operate. What is it made of? Most of the roller doors sold in the UK are typically made of sheets of galvanised plastic-coated steel or double-skinned aluminium lath. Compared with a sectional door, for example, the roller door does not feature wide panels, but instead use a hinged design to facilitate efficient rolling up or down motions for the roller door. Other materials include tracks that run the height of either side of the garage entrance, rubber weatherproof seals that close the gap between the door and the spaces around the opening, and a tubular drum attached on top of the entryway onto which the curtain is stored when the door is in use. What are the advantages of having one? Roller garage doors are particularly advantageous for those who have limited and narrow garage paths, as well as those with rather small garages that can fit only a single car. This is because the operating mechanism of a roller door does not require ample space outside nor inside the garage. In addition, since roller doors are made of durable materials, they are guaranteed to withstand stronger impact and not be subjected to denting and warping. This type of door is also popular because they are relatively easier to maintain compared with other types that employ counterbalance mechanisms. Can it be automated? Yes, rollerdoors can easily be automated if this is your preference. Using an electric door opener, such as the effective Hormann Supramatic or Ecostar, any manual roller door can be automated, allowing for remote operation from within a vehicle or inside a garage using a handheld device. Other companies also sell extra accessories such as a touch pad that facilitates keyless entry and lights that go on when the roller door is activated. With these features, it is easy to see why garage doors have become popular options among UK homeowners and entrepreneurs. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/4428068 |
